Today we had our first visitor to the cottage, and Sinead did us proud. We tackled the thatched roof in the living room, and managed to pull the old timbers, turf and straw down without burying ourselves. It is amazing how much material was up there – the pile we have out in the field is huge.  Incredible to think that it was all built without fixings, and was just sitting there. I take my hat off to the original builders.
I’ve bought some of the turf home, and it is burning merrily in our stove, so we’re getting one more use from it.
The entire thing should compost down, so it will be well used, and we can set about putting a new ceiling in with sheepswool insulation. Meanwhile we have transferred a fair amount of the dirt from the roof onto ourselves. 1 room down and 2 to go.
