On Tuesday this week, I’m off to Stormont to lobby (apparently the pc word is now ‘advocacy  not lobbying) Ken Robinson MLA of the Ulster Unionists, as he’s the party spokesman for all things arts and culture. I’m hoping to raise awareness of the work of the Heritage Crafts Association as here in Northern Ireland all we currently have is CraftNI and they are really concerned with contemporary craft rather than heritage crafts.
Skills have almost completely vanished in a number of areas such as weaving, woodturning here in Northern Ireland, not to mention a history of heavy industry that has pretty much evaporated, so preserving some of the skills involved before they become just a memory is really important.
Ken does give the impression of being interested, so we’ll see what occurs.
