This is today’s offering, and one that tempts me to become the founder member of ‘Occupy Ballyroney’. It’s an empty four(ish) bedroom farmhouse, that also used to double as the village shop. It’s been empty for some years now, and someone has already nicked the quarry tile floor from the sitting room, and a couple of fireplaces. Other than that its really not in such bad condition, and would make a brilliant hostel / farm shop.
The old shop interior. Our old neighbour remembers walking across the field to this hop to buy paraffin for their lamps.
Hi Steve, We have the same problem in parts of Scotland. Lots of empty houses and an unbelievable amount of holiday homes both of which could be used to breathe new life into rural communities.
As you discussed in your previous post large scale modern farming and supermarkets seem to have things sewn up but some time ago the UN released a report that puts small scale farming firmly on the world food production map. This should take you to an article and link about the UN report. http://www.slashfood.com/2011/03/08/u-n-small-scale-farming-could-double-the-worlds-food-productio/

Great pictures Steve – it is such a loss to us all that these places, lives and memories are just left to decay. I’m with you. Come the revolution. Possession for the people they cry!!
I’m going to make an effort to stop and photograph all the ones around me, it’ll be quite a collection. (and I’m very nosy).
