Why not unplug and unwind on a stay in our unique converted horse truck. Refurbished using reclaimed materials, this cosy space enjoys great views of the Mourne Mountains and is tucked away on a corner of our off grid smallholding in the County Down countryside. If you’re looking for a unique place to stay, that is truly off the grid then the horsebox is for you. We are offering you the chance to get an additional 10% off the cost of your stay, by quoting the offer code WEB1 when you book direct.

Kitchen diner in the off grid horse box

A well equipped kitchen and dining area, lobby, shower room, snug with a wood burning stove  and box bed are all cleverly fitted into our Ford truck. The truck was our home for a time before we found Lackan Cottage Farm, and we still miss living in the cosy space. Your very own herb garden, composting loo, and solar power are all part of the off-grid experience.

The truck has a big kitchen / dining room, with a full size gas cooker and plenty of storage. It also has a unique handcrafted space that uses local timbers, non-toxic finishes, and upcycled materials. The kitchen is well equipped, so you’ll find everything you need there. Hot water is provided by a combination of woodstove and gas heater, which also heat the shower.

The off-grid horse box is one of the most unusual places to stay in Northern Ireland

The living room and box bed are cosy, and fitted out using reclaimed timber, mainly from heat-treated pallets. You’ll find a Stanley woodstove, which ensures you’ll always be warm and which heats the hot water in the truck, as well as a variety of hand crafted art pieces in willow and wood. Lying in bed, you have a beautiful view of the Mourne Mountains.

deck area of off grid horse box

The truck is tucked away in a corner of our smallholding, and has it’s own deck area with seating and a chiminea. You’ll find the composting toilet not too far away, and there are a variety of herbs growing in the garden area around the truck. The back of the truck and seating area have great views across the countryside to the Mourne Mountains beyond.

The hobbity bit

The hobbity bit

When I say that 2025 wasn't a good year, I forget that somehow we managed to finish what was really quite a big job. It all started when out of frustration at the never ending rodent problem down at the wood store end of our living room, I decided that the way to go...

Rebuilding in 2026

Well, its been a while. I'll gloss over the absence of posts for the last while and continue as if nothing happened. 2025 (and really 2024) was a bad year - my mum was ill for a long time, and died at the end of May 2025, and then the rest of the year vanished. When...
