Stay in safety – Birch Cottage / Lackan Cottage Farm is in a rural setting and it is possible to check in, stay on site, enjoy the countryside, and remain safely isolated from others during your stay. We have thoroughly assessed all the risks and taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our guests, ourselves and our community. We have developed thorough cleaning protocols using approved methods and products that ensure the property is always in a safe and thoroughly clean condition for all our guests.
The prices quoted here are inclusive, and are per night, so up to 2 people can stay for that price. We have a minimum 2 night stay, with subsequent nights being discounted. We also charge a small cleaning fee per visit. All bath and kitchen towels are included, as is bed linen, a basket of firewood and free WIFI.
The cottage sleeps two people in a super-king size bed with views of the birch wood. It has an ensuite bathroom with a shower over bath, comfortable living/dining room with a woodburning stove and views of the mountains, and a well equipped kitchen with a pantry.
Organic cotton bed linen and towels are provided, as are basic essentials such as tea, coffee and kitchen condiments. Guest parking is outside the cottage, and you are free to explore the woodlands. Please note that we cannot accommodate pets or children under 16 years of age. Visitors love the peace and tranquility of this rural getaway, and for that reason you won’t find a TV here.
Birch Eco Cottage is part of our organic smallholding near Ballyroney where it sits amidst the unique County Down landscape of rolling drumlin hills. With views of our woodlands on one side and the Mourne Mountains on the other, the cottage is a quiet haven. Everything has been handcrafted using local timbers and reclaimed materials to create a truly unique visitor experience.
This off grid cottage is beautifully made to be a natural, healthy environment. It offers you a cosy, personal space that has the highest environmental credentials but which doesn’t compromise visitor comfort. This is what makes Birch Cottage one of the few cottages in Northern Ireland to hold a Green Tourism Gold award and a 4 star Tourism Northern Ireland rating. We are also the first Green Key accredited business in Ireland.
You can explore our woodland, and we provide a full basket of firewood. Powered entirely by solar and wind power, with a wood burning stove and solar hot water to provide underfloor heating and hot water, the cottage is proudly carbon neutral.
There are a number of lovely walks close by the cottage, through Lackan Bog Area of Special Scientific Interest, and Annahunshigo lake. Local shops, pubs and restaurants are five miles away.
The beautiful Mourne Mountains and seaside town of Newcastle are also close by.
We are perfectly located for Mountain Bike trails and National Outdoor Centre in Tollymore Forest Park, as well as the Life Outdoor Pursuits Centre, Maze, Arboretum, and walks in Castlewellan Forest Park.

Damage Deposit
We ask guests for a refundable damage deposit of £80. This will be authorised but not taken from your card.
Restrictions
Birch Cottage i not suitable for children of any age (including babies), and we do not allow pets.
Our property is off grid – we generate our own power using wind and solar which is stored in batteries. Therefore we are unable to support electric vehicle charging on site at this time. We have no grid connection.
