You won’t want to leave

Visitors to Birch Cottage often say they wish they’d been able to stay longer. Furthermore, they find themselves spending their time right here on the farm. You can take a relaxing stroll in the woods or perhaps meet the horses. This is an organic smallholding, so wildlife is thriving and you’ll find many species of bird outside your windows.  This is what eco accommodation in Ireland is all about.

Curl up by candle light in front of the woodburning stove, or sit in the sun and take in views of the mountains and the woods, which are just a few yards away. Even the hugely comfortable, super king size bed has a view of the birch wood.

What we offer

We offer free range eggs, and seasonal vegetables when possible, and all guests get a full supply of firewood for their visit. Organic cotton bed linen and towels are provided, as are basic essentials such as tea, coffee and kitchen condiments.  Guest parking is outside the cottage, and you are free to explore the woodlands. You might also like to wander in the gardens and meet our horses.

There are a number of lovely walks close by the cottage, through Lackan Bog Area of Special Scientific Interest, and Annahunshigo lake. Local shops, pubs and restaurants are five miles away. Outdoor pursuits enthusiasts have Tollymore and Castlewellan forest parks just 10 minutes away. The beautiful Mourne Mountains and seaside town of Newcastle are also close by.

What makes Birch Cottage so special?

The interior of Birch Cottage combines elements of a traditional Irish cottage with modern ideas. Eco accommodation in Ireland.
Birch Cottage dates originally from the 1840’s, and has been restored sympathetically with natural materials to retain some of the feel of a traditional Irish cottage but with a modern twist. Everything has been hand crafted  using local timbers, reclaimed materials, and is chemical free, creating a unique self catering experience.
Many of the things in the cottage are handmade by ourselves, friends or local crafts people
Many items in the cottage are unique, and made by ourselves, friends and local craftspeople. We offer some for sale, and prices are available on request.
The cottage is powered entirely by solar and wind, and heated by wood, and the sun.
Powered entirely by solar and wind power, with a woodburning stove and solar hot water to provide underfloor heating and hot tap water, the cottage is carbon neutral in use. Comfortable, cosy and quirky, you won’t want to leave.
