Yesterday I set off to collect our new hens from William over in Cloughey. Daylight reveals that we have 1 Welsummer cockerel, 2 Welsummer hens, 2 Light Sussex, 2 black bantams, 1 goldeny bantamy thing, and a mystery grey hen. They are living in the new polytunnel for as long as it takes to turn over the ground, and then we’ll introduce them to the existing flock.
Any ideas? She’s not an Araucana, and is as big as as Welsummer.
A tiny goldeny hen – but what am I?
A hard frost last night, and an amazing sunrise over the mountains.
A bare looking growing field – not for too long…
Wish I could help but I have no idea , maybe a Maran? They look lovelY though, hope they settle in ok. Nice atmospheric photos
Steve, the mystery grey one looks like a Bluebell…we have two of them, there are some pics on our blog of them. Yours looks like a Bluebell that hasn’t molted.
Hi Steve, yes my thought was a Bluebell for the grey one – we had one. Beautiful bird. Not sure what other one is though, sorry.
Hi Steve,
Dunno about the hen breeds? Hopefully they will get rid of any wireworms. If not plant mustard for a green manure – they (wireworms) hate it. Only thing is mustard is a brassica so you can’t plant brassicas there. I should of said are you going to put landscape fabric down or just plant direct in the soil? They look healthy and happy hens. My ducks have gone off lay and we are feeding them for three months for no reward. Such is life!
