Midsummer is upon us, and we were fortunate to be able to celebrate the solstice eve with friends from far and wide – visitors from no less than five nations were here on Saturday. I’m always in two minds about the summer solstice – given that it marks the point where we begin slow journey towards darkness, my feeling is that it was once an occasion to try and persuade the light to return, and that perhaps midwinter was the time of greater celebration as the light returned, especially up here where the days are so short come December.
