This is my 1974 Citroen HY camper. Since my original post, she’s had an awful lot of work, and is now able to be used fully off grid. The 200ah lithium leisure battery powers the camper and is charged by a combination of the engine, when the van is on the move, and a 440w solar panel when its stationary. It has a diesel heater run from the van tank, controlled by a thermostat; a gas hob, a compressor fridge, which uses remarkably little power, and a cold water tap.
The van itself has had substantial work to get it ready to travel – the clutch, suspension, brakes, engine wiring and exhaust have all been replaced, as have the wheels. Its had modern headlights fitted, soundproofing, and a proper service, all of which has taught me an awful lot about vintage Citroens. That said she is ready for another couple of decades of travel now, and I’m as confident as I can be that she will get me where I need to go.
