Solar power is wonderful but here in Northern Ireland sun is often in short supply, especially in winter when the days are short. Hence the need for an alternative – in this case a wind turbine. Bornay, who make this particular model have been building turbines since the 1970’s so we are hoping that they’ve perfected them by now. Ours is a 3kw, 2 bladed affair weighing in at 100kg, and 4m wingspan, and it is perched atop a somewhat over engineered 9 metre mast that is anchored with 4 steel cables to the rock below. The mast is, to put it mildly, heavy. So heavy in fact that four of us could barely lift one of the two halves.

and so had to roll, drag and generally cadjole the two halves on and off the trailer, and into position before bolding them together and attaching the whole to the hinge at the bottom.

This not inconsiderable weight is then hoisted into place using a rather noisy and suspect electric winch –

The new wind turbine mast is raised for the first time. Thanks to Felix, Rachel and Jaclyn for making it happen 🙂
